I took these photos 50 years ago in July 1969.
People from that time reached out to me yesterday, as well as new friends who are artists and, like me, are sorting through feelings of horror, helplessness and the injustice of damage to a structure that was an inspiration since the year 1160.
When I took these photos and others so long ago, from inside one of the towers and from across the river, I didn’t know what I was doing. I just pressed the shutter button. I’ve tried to clean off the scratches and remove the yellowing.
Still, I’ll just have to see it from the love I had for it – in memory.
