The foundation photo for “Child In Poland” was taken in October, 1988.
Poland's 1988 workers’ strikes, as well as street demonstrations, continued through spring and summer, ending early September 1988.
So, when we landed in Frankfuhrt, Germany, October 1988, to change planes for Warsaw, we weren’t quite sure what would find when we landed.
Although Russian soldiers still roamed the streets, their guns were at rest. Instead of visible turmoil, the underlying challenges came into focus: food shortages and contamination worsened, trams did not run on time, petrol stations were sparse and getting gas at 11 pm in order to get from what remains in Auschwitz to the Warsaw airport, before our visas expired . . . was doubtful.
Still, while we were there on a peace mission, I saw this child – on this street. I took this photo to remember gentle friendliness and a sweet face that smiled the assumption: things will get better.
